“Choose a job you love, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life”. This Confucius quote is likely one we’re all familiar with. But is it really true? Let’s break it down.
Let’s operate under the assumption you were able to find a job you loved. One that filled you with joy and motivated you to get out of bed in the morning. Now… never working a day in your life simply because you love your job? Every job has an aspect to it that most would find unenjoyable. Filing, firing underperforming employees, monotonous meetings, there’s really no job that’s perfect and fulfilling in every aspect. There will be days you won’t want to get up. Days when minor work irritations throw your mood for the week in jeopardy. Does doing what you love to sound like work now?
There are a variety of misconceptions about doing what you love for work. Thinking that burnout is unnatural only adds to the stigma around burnout from doing an activity or job you’re passionate about. This sense of taboo only serves to perpetuate shame in the workplace surrounding conversations about losing your spark. Just because you have a job you love, doesn’t mean it isn’t still a job. And, with any job, there is the potential for burnout. Ignite Life Project recognizes the prevalence of burnout, even in those channeling their passion into their work. We all lose our spark occasionally. That doesn’t mean the work is meaningless or not worth doing.
