80/20 BALANCE in the thick of Summer

Let’s be honest… these long summer days can be packed with fun summer activities, friends, weekend BBQ’s and lots of imbibing!

We are huge believers in the 80/20 balance. If you try to do anything 100% that makes it a diet, and 99% of diets end in failure. For us, 80/20 gives us permission to be real, to enjoy life, and to have that glass of wine or that chocolate after dinner.

Here are our favorite easy upgrades to keep your 80/20 balance in check!

1. Skip the Bun!

Have your burger over a salad. It’s just as delicious and you can add some salsa or guac to make it more exciting.

2. Healthy-ish margarita

2 oz tequila tres agave organic tequila
splash of Zevia tonic water
splash of soda water
Lime juice

3. Grilled Brown Rice Tortilla Pizzas

These are a staple in Em’s home. The kids love them and they are a quick healthy 5 minute meal.

Brown Rice Tortillas (stack two together for each pizza)
Pizza sauce or Pesto sauce
Cheese options: Organic raw cheese, nutritional yeast, cashew cheese (we like Meyokos)
Topping Option Ideas: Any and all chopped veggies. Garlic, Artichokes, Olives, Capers , Tomatoes, Mushrooms.
Protein Options: Organic Chicken, Organic Turkey, Sausage, Organic Ground Turkey,
Leafy Green toppings: Arugula, Spinach

Instructions:
Stack two tortillas on top of each other. You can sprinkle some cheese in between them to stick them together.
Add your pizza sauce, toppings, and cheese!
Grill for 10 minutes on low heat, or in the oven for about 15 minutes until the tortilla is crispy.

4. Upgrade your white wine to a white wine spritzer.

It’s just as fun but ½ the alcohol and sugar. Just add some sparkling water to your white wine and enjoy!

5. Make it a mocktail!

Our favorite brands for Mocktails:

Seedlip: This tastes like gin and has zero alcohol.
Kin
Recess
Calmingco
Rosé

6. Simple and Delicious Vanilla Ice cream
Handful of ice
1⁄4 cup raw cream
1⁄4 cup raw milk
1 T coconut butter
1 T raw honey
1 tsp vanilla
Blend in vitamix and enjoy.

For fun topping ideas, add cacao powder, cacao nibs and peppermint extract to make it a minty treat.

7. 80/20: Cucumber Basil Moscow Mule

Sprig of Basil
Sprig of Mint
2 cucumber slices
Zest and juice of one lime
1.5 oz vodka or seedlip mixer
Splash of Zevia ginger
couple dashes of bitters
Soda Water

Instructions:
In a cocktail shaker or mason jar combine torn basil, mint, cucumber, lime zest, lime juice, and vodka or seedlip. Add a good handful of ice, cover with a lid, and shake it like crazy. Strain the mixture into two glasses filled with ice. Divide the ginger beer between the two glasses and top with a couple of dashes of bitters.
Mix and enjoy!

8. Starbucks Drive-Through Upgrade

We have all been there. In the drive-through and desperate for a snack. But the alluring smell of coffee and cake pops is hard to deny! Here are our favorite upgrades.

If you have to have coffee, go for an Americano. Skip the syrup and ask for honey instead.
If you are craving a latte, try a London fog with honey instead of vanilla syrup.
Iced or black tea instead of a frappuccino. The Javamint has 69 grams of sugar.
Egg bites for a quick protein boost.
Iced or hot herbal tea will hit the spot! Skip the pre-mixed green tea matcha. Even though it sounds healthy its mascarading as a sugar bomb.
Skip the lemonade!!! Most of these have more than 20-30 grams of sugar. This will put you on the sugar rollercoaster and set you up for an afternoon headache and just craving more sugar. Grab a spindrift or sparkling water instead.

9. Make homemade popsicles!

Skip the Otter pops and make your own! We love blending up healthy ingredients and freezing them into a beautiful popsicle. Try this: Blend up some watermelon, lime, and mint and freeze! Easy Peasy.
